The Clash at Bond's, 1981

This poster is for when the Clash did a residency at Bond's International Casino (now Bond 45, a restaurant) in Times Square in 1981. They played 17 shows in three weeks to support "Sandinista", which, by the way, is one of my favorite albums of all eternity; so as you can guess, I would just about die to be around at that time!!!! And to top it off, the opening bands included the Fall, the Slits, the Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, and Bush Tetras – all the goods.

It's worth mentioning that all the shows were sold out and they caused fire hazards, riots, police intervention, etc.

New York Rocker

The New York Rocker was a monthly paper dedicated to underground music, published from 1976 to 1982. It covered all my favorites, as well as employed awesome music photographers, Laura Levine and Ebet Roberts.

I totally remember their logo from back then; a signature where you could pretty much only read a G and a Y.

The Prada group shut them down in 2005, and it's hard to find much info about them online. It seems like about half of the info I did find is incorrect, but here seems to be the most reliable info about them.

Joe Strummer in Alex Cox's Straight to Hell, 1987. The film also features Courtney Love, Elvis Costello, Grace Jones, and some Pogues.

Tati shopping bag, designed by Maurice Benayoun for an artist series of shopping bags curated by Cyrille Putman in 1998 for Tati, which is a French department store. I think it's like Target.

Orange Juice, as it says

I took this photo when I was vacationing in Barcelona last year. This shop was on the same block as our hotel. I love the merchandise in the window because I'm a big fan of color and tights, and I super-love everything about the sign; even the name. The shop itself wasn't terribly interesting though!

The Clash, shot by Bob Gruen, probably in 1981 during their residency at Bonds. They look especially hot here. I am not sure that I've ever referred to the Clash as "hot" but I guess it's true about 75% of the time. Sometimes I find myself having a bit of a crush on Mick Jones, partly because I once dreamt he was my boyfriend and that he was very sweet and charming.

Tsunehisa Kimura (1928-2008) was a photo-montage artist (another pre-Photoshop artist). I have not been able to locate a title for this piece.

Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar. I love Carle's illustration style!

Yves St. Laurent by Roxanne Lowit, 1983

Artinfo has an interesting and extensive article about this piece that Andy Warhol did for an exhibition celebrating Leo Castelli Gallery's 10-year anniversary in 1967.

They are portraits of the rest of the artists who were also in the exhibition, silk screened on plastic boxes. There were 225 made, all with different configurations of the boxes.

This is from a New York Times article in 1981, around the time of the Clash's residency at Bond's.

Locks in an upstate NY antique shop by Mimi Jung, of the blog Brook&Lyn. I really enjoy her blog and her style.

Another negative-space illustration by Coles Philips, probably adapted to a Life magazine cover. Such an interesting style, especially for the time period in which they were done (the 1910's).

Nakagin Capsule Hotel, designed by Kisho Kurokawa, built between 1970 and 1972. It's currently in poor shape, and future plans whether to demolish or restore have not yet been solidified.
